Digital Versus Offset Printing
Tuesday, November 25th, 2008 | Design, Printing, Tips, Uncategorized | 5 Comments
There has been alot of question raised recently when clients contact me for webthris printing services, one of the most common one is, “What is the difference between digital and offset printing?” and “Which one do I use to print my materials?”
Let me first start by explaining what are the definition of both terminology.
Digital Printing: If you have your own personal desktop printer at home, then you would understand the meaning of digital printing easier. Digital printing directly produces the outcome without the need of films, plates and so on. It’s design to paper directly.
Offset Printing: Offset printing on the other hand, requires film and plates to be created before the printing process can begin (Modern Offset Printers allows the design to be directly printed on printing materials). Offset Lithography is the most commonly trusted high volume commercial printing technology. As mentioned earlier, the design is first exposed onto the film, which then will be transfered to the plates (which can be in the form of rubber or steel), and finally onto the printing surface. The lithography process is based on repulsion of oil and water. The image to be printed gets ink from ink rollers, while the non printing area attracts a film of water, keeping the non printing areas ink-free.
What are the Advantages of both techniques?
Digital Printing Advantages
- If you’re doing small runs, this method would cost alot cheaper.
- Shorter turnaround time
- Every print is the same.
- More accurate counts, less waste and fewer variations, due to not having to balance ink and water during press run.
Offset Printing Advantages
- Higher quality of image, better resolution, usually do not cause streaks or spots.
- You can use many types of printing surface, for example, paper, wood, plastic, cloth, metal etc.
- Many modern offset presses use “computer-to-plate” further increasing quality.
- Cheaper, the unit price per piece goes down as the printing quantity increases.
- Very effective for high volume jobs.
So when it comes back to the question of “Which printing method do I use?”, we should consider the following key points.
Quantity: Offset printing has a high initial cost, such as the ink, running cost and so on. Offset is usually done in quantity of 1000 rounds per printing. So when the print quantity is low, using offset printing is not recommended (unless you’re looking at a better quality printing). Digital printing would then be a better method to select when it comes to very low quantity printing.
Printing Medium: One of the things you have to consider is the printing surface. Digital printers usually have limited paper types that you can print one, some digital printer may not support papers which are very thick. Offset printing would then be your option as these printers can print on many surfaces such as plastic, metal, rubber and so on. The size also matters, digital printers usually supports smaller size printing (usually A3 or A2 size only). Offset printers can print bigger size.
Colour Usage: Digital printing uses the 4 colors process printing (CMYK- Cyan Magenta Yellow & Black). If you’re looking at printing something that are of 1 color or even 2 colors, offset printing would be a much more effective approach.
Pantone Color Printing: If you’re planning to print using the Pantone® Matching System, offset printing will give you the best match, since it uses actual Pantone® ink. Digital printing simulates the color using a four-color matching process, so some digital printers may offer less accurate color matching on projects.
Turnaround Time: If you need the particular printings to be done at a quicker time, digital printing would be a better approach as they are faster. Eventhough mentioned, offset printers nowdays can also produce the printings fast (Usually costlier machines).
Proofing Of Design: Digital printing would be more accurate to be used for proofing the printing items as what you see on the screen are usually the same when printed on paper (unless the screen resolution is different).
Customization: When you’re looking at printing something such as letterhead, namecards etc that changes very often, then you would want to consider using digital printing as you can print as and when required. Offset printing would be too costly to print a handfull of materials.
As a conclusion, you may use both printing technique, depending on what you require based on the points stated above. We should not take away either printing method as they are both have their own advantages.

Business Cards That Work
Monday, August 18th, 2008 | Advertising, Design, Printing, Tips, Uncategorized | 2 Comments
Before we even create a website, before we even send out our brochures, what is the most vital device that keeps us in touch with our clients. The answer simply is, the namecard, also known as a business card. This is the most important tool that you’re going to ever create.
In this blog, based on my experience and expertise I’m going to explain to you what are the key points to consider when creating your very own namecard.
Use a logo
A logo is very important and this is the one that identifies your company. You can create your own logo or get a professional designer to do one for you. Your logo should symbolize the product or service that you are selling. For example, if you own a cafe, your logo should have a photo of a cup of coffee, photo of a fork n spoon and so on. You should keep the softcopy of your logo so that you can scale it to fit business cards, letterhead, brochures, and your website. Want to save on your logo creation? Try visiting LogoWorks.com, a very famous and cheap logo creation company on the internet.
Develop a one-line slogan
You should create a chatchy phrase for your company. Webthris Creative Studio carries the slogan “All Under One Roof” (We are considering to change this soon, maybe you can comment a slogan for us). The slogan should help your clients remember what you are selling and it should be on your namecard.
Include your website address and/or email address
Always give customers an option to know more about your company, this is where a website is vital. Have the link on your namecard, and always make sure that your website is complete, with contact details and so on. Visiting a website that says ”Under Construction” can be annoying. Some customers dont like to call a contact number just to get simple enquiry. This is where the email address comes in place. It allows customers to ask you anything, that some might be shy or reluctant to ask on the phone.
Make your card readable
Make sure that you use the correct font type and sizes. Using Italics may not be a good idea, and size 8 is a little too small. The average font size would be between 10 and 12 for details. Make sure that your logo is also viewable. Do not use too much red for fonts. Try to use your corporate color for your namecard. Remember, your business card is not just a work of art. It is also to clearly communicate what you do and how to reach you. If customers cannot read your information, you’ll lose sales.
Make your card stand out from the rest of the pack
Do something different that other namecard does not have (You can check my blog on “Cool and Elegant Namecard Design: Part 1” for samples). Make use of Spot UV, Matt Lamination, Curving Corners etc. Remember, your namecard is going to be on their desk with so many hundreds of others, make it stand out.
Have your business cards printed on good card-stock
Use good paper (Visit Webthris Namecard Details for a list of paper types and prices). Some materials are waterproof, some are thing and fit nicely in a wallet, so make sure you select what suits you best.
Print your own namecard if required
Offset printing of namecard would usually take 3-4 days and a digital print would take 1day. Some instant printing company may do it for you within hours. So plan your printing properly, and make sure that you have a good stock of namecard at hand. You’ll never know when you’ll need them. Print the namecard yourself, using your own printer if needed.
This are the list of simple but important issues when planning a namecard. Do make sure you consider them. Looking forward to your comments.

Uncyclopedia Anyone!!
Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 | Uncategorized | 3 Comments
Uncyclopedia is an encyclopedia full of misinformation and utter lies. You might say it puts the “psych!” in “encyclopedia”. It’s sort of like Congress or Parliament, but unlike Congress or Parliament, we do have a sense of humor. Nonetheless, this is one of the only factual pages, before everything turns into a puddle of utter confusion and disarray. Savor it. And for the love of Sophia, we know you like disarray, (and confusion) but stop adding confusion to this non-confusing page which leads to confusion, and possibly disarray. Which we wish to stop. Non-non-confusion, that is. Not disarray. Or is it the other way around?
The Uncyclopedia is the greatest achievement of mankind at the height of his splendor. The Philistines believe that the whole universe sprung into being just so that in one particular bit of the multiverse, a group of crazy, up-jumped, ninja-obsessed, hard-drinking monkeys might create the thing you see before you now. No, not your hands. No, that’s not it either. Look up at the screen. There. Much better.
So polished is Uncyclopedia that you never see dorky references to science fiction or video gamer jargon that only 13 yr. old boys understand! No siree. This is so cool everyone hangs around for all the funny entries and stupid made up titles because…well, no one really knows why anyone would be so stupid, but it’s in the archives, somewhere, under the heading “nörtti alert”.
